Sustainability
Sustainability means future viability. So clear, so simple, but also so urgent can be the maxim for this topic. Ecological, economic and social needs must go hand in hand. With its Agenda 2030, the United Nations has committed itself to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and we as SURTECO want to make our contribution to achieving these goals. To this end, we have developed a strategy based on the pillars of ecology, economy and social issues and defined concrete goals and measures to meet our responsibility.
Sustainability
Initiatives & goals
UN Goals
The "Agenda for Sustainable Development" was adopted by the member states of the United Nations in 2015 with the aim of improving peace and prosperity across the planet by 2030 and enabling future generations to do the same. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were formulated based on the cornerstones of economic progress, social justice and environmental protection. They are an urgent call to governments, businesses and civil societies to act in partnership to fulfil the 2030 Agenda.
Our goals
The Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda emphasise the importance of companies for sustainable development. Companies are explicitly encouraged to use their creativity and innovative power to solve the challenges of sustainable development. SURTECO is aware of this responsibility and therefore places particular focus on the sustainability targets where the company can make the greatest contribution.
Good health and well-being
"We make rooms worth living in". It is part of our self-image not only to develop functionally and aesthetically first-class products, but also to meet the highest emission and health standards. That is why we continuously optimise our production processes and raw material mix to deliver the best products to our customers. We also minimise adverse impacts on water and air quality in our production by, for example, reducing emissions and minimising plastic granule loss, and recycling and treating our wastewater when possible.
Sustainable consumption and production
We are committed to sustainable consumption and production. We continuously optimise the consumption of resources for our products. Our quality standards ensure that our products are designed for a long life span. On the one hand, we are working to improve the recyclability of our products so that the high-quality components we use remain in the recyclable material cycle. On the other hand, we are working to increase the proportion of recycled and bio-based raw materials in our products in order to keep our ecological footprint as low as possible. This is how we want to make our contribution to the circular economy.
Climate change measures
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Therefore, we have an ambitious plan to reduce our greenhouse gases so that they are in line with the latest scientific findings and the 1.5° target. In concrete terms, this means reducing scope 1 and 2 emissions by at least 50% by 2030 and achieving the net zero emissions target by 2045. Emissions that we are currently unable to avoid are offset through climate projects. At the moment, two subsidiaries, Kröning and Proadec, are certified as climate-neutral. But this is just the beginning for us.
Partnerships to achieve the goals
Sustainability requires collaboration at all levels across industries, geographic borders and stakeholders. This is the only way we can achieve the goals of the 2030 agenda. That is why SURTECO is intensifying cooperation with other stakeholders in this field, whether universities, start-ups or industry and sustainability initiatives. We have already submitted our declarations of intent for the UN Global Compact as well as the Science BasedTarget Initiative (SBTi), and further issue-specific partnerships will follow. We believe in the critical importance and effectiveness of partnerships to achieve goals, as this is the only way to pool knowledge, experience and skills and make the best use of them.
70% of all production sites environmentally certified according to ISO 14001 by 2025
50% of all products with at least one eco-label by 2025
Increase internal plastics recycling rate to 80% by 2025
Our achievements
Green electricity for all German sites
All German sites now purchase CO2-neutral green electricity. Through this measure, SURTECO is making a significant contribution to avoiding greenhouse gas emissions. However, this is only the beginning.
Achievements in recent years
CO2-Reduction
The site-related CO2-emissions at SURTECO have been significantly reduced in the recent years compared to the base year 2019. Thus, just under 25,000 tonnes were emitted last year, a reduction of 54% compared to 2019. Decisive factors for this success were the purchase of renewable energies at the German sites as well as significant improvements in energy efficiency at many sites.
